Taking up a sport or external activity with someone - even if it is something fun like a film subscription, bowling, or a lunch date.

Do you have any examples of positive obsessions you have been able to set up.

Underlying many obsessions are unreasonable fears. These fears are allowed to continue because often they are not analised, and logically thought about.

For instance, if you are obsessively making money, what is your attitude to money? How much will you need? How difficult will it be to get this amount? How much planning, and how much savings, are a reasonable amount?

You can investigate your philosophical beliefs and fears about money on the web (link coming soon).

A similar approach can take place if you have an unreasonable fear about your health, your appearance, or your sex life. Whatever you think your obsession is hiding, try writing a few journal entries about it. Try to find out what you fear, and what is a wiser, more healthy situation. It may help to talk about it. It will certainly help to be able to discuss your beliefs openly with others.

Overcoming obsessions is like anything else. If you want to avoid fudging things up, first learn a bit about them. It’s you that has to overcome it, so why not become an expert!

Below we have an overview of Obsessive Personality Disorders. There are also other good information sources out there. When you find a link, please post it as a comment, for others to follow your trail.

After you have read this information, also look out for our information on procrastination, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

An Overview of Obsessive Personality Disorders

Many people have heard about Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. But not many have heard about Obsessive Personality Disorders, a different illness, dispite it being one of the more common mental afflictions.

Also known as Obsessive Compulsive PD, Obsessive Disorders have been characterized as an extreme form of perfectionism. Often Obsessive Disorders appear after adolescence, and arise from issues of control. It can often be identified through treatment that these control issues as stemming from early parental causes.

More immediately, obsessive acts can develop through a sensitivity to anxiety and stress, which finds a release in the obsessive acts. Finding solutions for these anxieties, and just as importantly building up a resistance to and comfort with anxiety levels are effective treatment plans.

There is a long list of common obsessions listed on this site.

Negative consequences for an OCD sufferer might include:

the inability to complete important tasks, due to an overly perfectionist attitude

the loss of opportunities, enjoyment of life, interpersonal relationships, employment, and developing feelings of self disgust, due to symptoms which cannot be controlled

health related issues from overwork, lack of exercise, and stress

financial repercussions of unwisely spent time and energies

tension with others stemming from to an attempt to control others, to live up to their unreasonably high standards

becoming fearful and anxious generally, particularly over health, personal safety or the loss of money (even when this is cannot be explained by previous circumstances).

becoming overly rigid, inflexible, and generally losing previous carefree, happy attitudes to things

losing the ability to see the “big picture”, unable to effectively allocate resources such as time

Being unable to reach personal goals due to a preoccupation with trivialities and unnecessary detail

Treatment

The first step is for a patient to be aware that they have a disorder, and to want to seek treatment. An outline of the treatment options for an OPD sufferer, in a medical context, is currently being compiled for this page.

There is relatively little online advice for OPD. This video (relating to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) may serve as a somewhat similar introduction to the type of treatment philosophy that is recommended.

An obsession is a coping mechanism a patient develops to provide relief or protection from more profound anxieties. These anxieties can be anything from interpersonal, relationship, livelihood, or other anxieties. A build up of stress is experienced, which is relieved by the repetitive or obsessive action.

The most basic treatment strategy for obsessions is to assist patients to develop coping mechanisms to increase the space between a trigger, and a response. By way of example, for a computer addiction: a trigger might be wondering if you have received any new emails, and a response might be the refreshing, or logging onto, your email account.

We have developed a simple reminder you can activate when you recognize yourself stuck in such a situation. It uses leaving the room to get something - however, any physical break from the situation, and that works for your situation, can be used.

There are deeper, more fundamental psychological approaches to treating obsessions, such as developing balance, removing rigidity, or other, more constructive resolutions to anxiety. You can find some more information on in our other tips.

We’ve tried to make this website as thorough and user friendly as possible. We decided to make a website and not a book because that’s where a lot of obsessers are - surfing the web. But sometimes you can’t beat buying a book.

Buying a book is a unique sort of a commitment. Unlike a website - which is usually free - buying a book takes a whole lot of commitment. You have to really assess your situation, where you’ve got to, and what you need. You need to read up on the subject enough to make an informed buying decision. And once you’ve paid your money, you have an investment in getting your money’s worth - all great stimulants to providing a cure.

Fortunately, there are also some great books out there. Books that you can treat like personal guidebooks for getting out of any maze. books written by experts.

Here we’re collecting suggestions for the very best books that people have found most successful for overcoming obsessive disorders. If you have found such a book - one where many pages are folded, or many passages underlined - please leave a comment or review.

Here are our top books - all highly reccommended (coming soon).

It’s easy to think that we should have a will of iron, that can stand up to any temptation.

However, anyone will tell you that it is much harder to avoid eating candy when you have an open packet right next to you.

One of the keys to overcoming obsession is to give yourself physical distance from your obsession, and to enlarge the distance between a trigger and a response.

For instance, if you are addicted to the internet, how easily accessible is your browser shortcut? Could you make it less accessible?

How often do you take breaks? If you suffer from an obsessive personality, it is usually not very often. But forcing yourself to take a break can provide the space for you to reconsider what you are doing. Try hitting our Help button as an example. If you find yourself obsessed over something - go and get something to eat or drink.

It has been recommended you have a five minute break from work every hour regardless (or in some workplaces, doing ten minutes work on something else besides computer work each hour). If you go for lunch, turn the computer off. Go for a walk, or review your To-Do list. It is a great idea if you can move some work to a space without a computer in it.

Having a physical space will let your mind focus on other things, and give it new things to consider rather than your obsession.

We’re developing a list of free software that can give you regular reminders (mac users turn up and use their voice function on their clock settings as a reminder). Some people’s mobile phones have a reminder function. You should always wear a watch if possible, too.

An obsession is an problem because we have not been able to shift from its hold over us alone.

There are many ways we can help ourselves to get over obsessions. But we should remember that if things get tough, there is an alternative. If there is someone you trust to talk to, it is okay to ask them for assistance.

You might have a family member you feel comfortable talking to.

It might be a partner or a friend.

It might be a doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist.

If you are religious, it might be a priest, religious figure, or God.

Whoever you chose to talk to, it might be difficult to build up the courage. But remember you have done nothing wrong. You haven’t hurt anyone because of your problem. And it happens to up to 10% of people.

A supportive person can help in many ways. It might be anything from being able to check up on you from time to time, or to give you deadlines. Or else simple moral support, and to talk things over.

Whatever it is, if you have chosen the person wisely, it will make the world of difference.
